They're Applying in America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of deaths due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the president try to upend the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into a figure of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message is about love for other people, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when someone steals your coat you should give the person your additional clothing too.

The apparent and direct truth that the Jesus from scripture requests a type of radical love concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Highest of Us

So I have been heartened to witness the persistent defiance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you receive him and embrace them or not?

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, through connection to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean feigning the worst about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both humility and belief, a combination that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
