A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen people were hurt in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and another man who escaped following the blast was found soon after. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location showed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the property was facing an eviction order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander informed the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The official believed the explosion had happened on a story above the entrance and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
